TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I am going to be a senior accounting major and public policy and administration minor at James Madison University this fall. At JMU, I am a member of the club swim team, the Alternative Break Program, Phi Mu, and Greek leadership as a Student Hearing Officer. Swimming has been a huge part of my life since I was 5 years old and I am glad I can still continue this at JMU. I also enjoy cooking, trying new restaurants, experiencing new adventures, and making homemade crafts. My favorite craft to make is cards and I am really getting into calligraphy and hand lettering!
I am originally from South Jersey and have loved growing up so close to the Shore and my family and friends!
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO ACCOUNTING?
There are two stories that come to mind when I think of why I have decided to go into accounting.
When I was in 6th grade, I took a personal finance class and we learned to balance a checkbook and became really interested in business. Afterwards, I received an ATM as a gift and I was fascinated by it. I kept a notebook with it and would record depositing and withdrawing money with a running total and a detailed description of the transaction. I was an accountant before I even knew what it was!
My desire to pursue a career in business, and specifically accounting, was solidified due to a teacher. I was involved in yearbook in high school as the business manager and later the assistant editor. The yearbook advisor, who was also the accounting teacher, saw how much I was enjoying the position as the business manager, so she suggested that I take her accounting class next year. Being that she was my favorite teacher, I took her advice and have never looked back since! I owe it to her for helping me discover a career and major that I love.
HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT MITCHELL WIGGINS?
I learned about Mitchell Wiggins through an email my Managerial Accounting teacher sent out about Engage. I was interested in what a career in public accounting looks like so I decided to apply to the program. I attended the program in July 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the firm learning about careers and day to day tasks, and especially interacting with the people.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO INTERN AT MITCHELL WIGGINS?
I chose to intern at Mitchell Wiggins after having a positive experience at Engage. I enjoyed hearing about the internship program detail, set up, and possibilities. Things like field work, client interaction, working on teams, mentors, and an open door policy really intrigued me about Mitchell Wiggins. I am glad I made the choice to intern here this summer!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WORKING AT MITCHELL WIGGINS?
The best aspects of my experience at Mitchell Wiggins is that I am doing real work, learning tons, and working alongside helpful people.
I love the fact that I go to a variety of clients to do audit fieldwork, get to do tax research, and other meaningful jobs for the firm and its clients. I always feel like my work is valued and that really strengthens the internship experience as a whole. Mitchell Wiggins invests in all workers, including interns, to get the most up to date training about anything that you are interested in. Some training’s I have been a part of include accounting software, business etiquette, and accounting updates. This variety of training has helped me at my internship and will continue to help me as I finish my academic career and throughout my accounting career. Lastly, every person at Mitchell Wiggins is SO friendly, eager to help, and great to learn from. It was hard to pick a single aspect that makes my experience at Mitchell Wiggins positive!
